THE HISTORY OF TEACHER EDUCATION IN NIGERIA. PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS.

Abstract.

Every nation strives towards the provision of affordable and quality education for all her citizens, realizing that education is necessary to engineer and consolidate any nation’s developmental process. However, achieving quality education would be a mirage if teacher education is not in good shape. This work is meant to examine the historical development of teacher education in Nigeria, the aim of teacher education in Nigeria, the present position of teacher education in Nigeria, the expected roles and attributes of a good teacher and the need for professionalization of the word teaching profession. Above all, an important vital part of this work circles around the problems facing teacher education in Nigeria which are inadequate funding, poor perception of teacher education by the society, problem of attrition in teaching, lack of commitment among teachers, unethical behavior of most teachers nowadays and lack of motivation from the government, as well the society. In view of the noted problems, it is therefore recommended, as ways of moving teacher education forward, that the public should develop positive perception of teachers; the teacher education curriculum must be reviewed in conformity with the changing world today. Also there should be improved welfare package for teachers. The government, as well as other stakeholders should ensure that befitting infrastructures are put in place to make for better teacher education program.
