INDISCIPLINE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOOLS: THE CHALLENGES FOR STAKEHOLDERS IN EDUCATION IN ADAMAWA STATE.

Abstract.

This research brings to the fore indiscipline in public senior secondary schools, the challenges of stakeholders. Indiscipline refers to major offences committed by students in some schools, like stealing, lying, bulling, lateness to school, rioting, cruelty, absence and truancy. The study was carried out to: Identify the causes of indiscipline and the effects of indiscipline and the challenges for stakeholder in public senior secondary schools in Adamawa State. A cluster simple random sampling techniques was used in selecting 300 respondents from some selected secondary schools in Adamawa State. Data was collected with the use of questionnaire which was subjected to validity and reliability test. Guttman split-half was used in establishing the reliability, which gave a reliability index of 0.89. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The Mean and one sample t-Test were used in analyzing the data collected. From the data analyzed, it was revealed that the causes of indiscipline are lack of security, poor devotion to study, poor attitude towards learning, abolition of corporal punishment, lack of infrastructural facilities and peer pressure. The effects of indiscipline are dropout from school, wastage of resources invested by government and parent, truancy and examination malpractice. While challenges for stakeholders were, infrastructure in schools, Students’ attitude to learning, poor study habits and discipline, menace of examination malpractice, Inadequate instructional materials, Inadequate qualified teachers. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: That government should make sure that schools are provided with adequate facilities for teaching and learning, stakeholders, such as parents, teachers, non-governmental organizations, educational authorities, corporate bodies, past students should find lasting solutions to the social menace, school administrators, parents and teachers should show good examples to students since they imitate and copy their behaviours, school administrators, teachers and parents should reduce indiscipline through increased supervision, school administrators should provide guidance and counseling services in their schools.
