INFLUENCE OF FAMILY TYPES ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ MORAL BEHAVIOUR IN KEFFI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASARAWA, STATE.

Abstract.

This study examined the Influence of Family types on moral behavior of secondary school students in Keffi Local Government of Nasarawa State. The family types examined were monogamous and polygamous. A sample of 240 students (131 males and 109 female) were selected from a population of 13605 (8199 males and 5406 females) using multi- stage sampling technique. The researcher developed instrument titled Influence of Family Types on Secondary School Students’ Moral behavior (IFTSSSMB) was used to elicit information from respondents. It was divided into two sections A and B. Section A elicited respondents’ bio- data while section B tapped respondents’ information on family types. Content and construct validity of the instrument were validated by some experts in the Faculty of Education, Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The reliability of the instrument was determined by a pilot study using 60 subjects in Karu Local Government who possess similar characteristics with those in the main study. The index of reliability was determined using Cronbach’s alpha, which yielded 0.85. Two research questions and corresponded research hypotheses guided the study and was tested at .05 level of significance. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentage) for demographic characteristics of respondents and to answer research questions 1-2. Chi- Square was used to test hypotheses 1-2, the findings shows that; 1 family type (polygamous and monogamous) has significant influence on moral behavior of students. Based on the findings, it was recommended that; 1.Parents should have a closer relationship with their secondary school students and lay more emphasis on their moral life.2. Parents should carry every secondary school student along in the family irrespective of family size, emphasis should be on moral up bring of the secondary school student. 3. Parents should adopt secondary school student upbringing that will help in building good morality in their children.
